Poetry by Anisa Tavares

evergreen

candid photographs above a blackened furnace
stovetop grilled cheese and marble countertops
worn down over time
time spent between you and me

bedsheets scattered every which way
love spread in each direction like peanut butter on bread
the lights flicker
it’s almost time to pay the bills

the tv’s on but no one’s watching
we’re too infatuated with each other’s scent
i wonder if it could be this possible to get closer to you each and every time
and yet i still manage
to absorb you into my skin
no shower could erase you from my memory

wooden planks keep out the breeze
and the winter watch forecast overhead
nothing matters within these walls

blackened coffee and unused creamer
spilled sugar granules
laundry to fold
washed dishes in the sink
the beach towels lay out on the porch to dry
all this time will never be enough

let’s leave our cars in the driveway
and allow the grass to grow over the tires
let’s cement ourselves into the pavement

and die knowing that i was the one for you
and you for me
